i have a 70 H.P. Nissan outboard! (about an 89 model) coming back in off the water yesterday i started having this problem!..... When i start the motor, it idles fine! if i go into reverse it propels fine! however, when i shift into forward, at full throtle, it gets to about 1100 R.P.M.'s. the nose of the boat will not raise out of the water and i keep hearing a ticking noise every now and then! once i got off the water i put it in reverse and the prop locks ( it will not spin clockwise or counter clockwise) if it's in nutruel ( it spins freely) and if it's in forward ( it spins counter clockwise but not clock wise and it makes a ticking noise) anybody know what is going on with this thing? where do i start? Riverrat told me about this site and i'm hoping that i ca get a few good leads! Thanks Riverrat!

Re: 70 H.P nissan outboard trouble

Not going to try and answer your question but add. I am having same problems. This is in addition the problems I already had. My first problem was bogging down on full throttle. Loading the boat by myself on the windy day I think I may have tore something up. This 60 Hp Nissan will turn the prop when you crank in out of the water in both forward and reverse. You can have the motor running in gear and kill the motor. Then when you check the prop in clockwise rotation it turns freely and clicks a little. In reverse gear the prop locks as if it were in gear. I am thinking I may have tore up the gears in the foot or the shifter cable is out of adjustment. Im not sure if these early 90 model Nissans have shear pins. I pulled the prop and didn't see one. I bought a manual online so I am hoping it will help. I know it's easier just to load it up and carry to a boat place but I just got laid off and don't want to spend a fortune on an old boat. Maybe someone will write and help
both of us.:)
One other thing I would like to add. It goes in reverse easier when the motor is running and has become hard to get in reverse when not running.NISSAN NS60A:D
