I bought a 7 to 5 pin adapter for my truck. My trailer lights do not work. My question is 7 pin adapter vehicle specific or is it standard across ford/Chevy/dodge?

You have disc brakes? Was the adapter bringing out reverse or electric brake?

the connections are standard, however you should trace your wiring. most 7 pin connectors I have seen are wired to the truck with only 4 wires which defeats the purpose of the 7 pin.

the 5-pin is used to fire the solenoid so your brakes do not work in reverse

Sort of. Some trucks require that relays and fuses be plugged in so that the other pins are activated. My old 2002 F150 required a "kit" which was 2 relays and a fuse or 2 that hooked into the box under the hood so that the brake/reverse circuits worked. My 09 dodge had them all active from the factory.

What is your tow vehicle?

Been there, done that on 4 trailers now. While vehicle pins are standardized, trailers are not. The first thing I do to any new trailer is to install a conduit box on the tongue and wire a 7pin pig tail to the trailer. Adjustments between auto standard and trailer "standards" are done in box

The adapter could be bad, maybe test that, seems like I go though those every few months. I'm sure they're made in china.

Re: 7 to 5 pin

Well nothing is working now. So if its standard across all trucks I can rule out getting the wrong 7 pin adapter. I think I need to look at the truck now. I pulled every fuse and made sure they were good. Its a new to me truck so I don't know if it was ever working properly. Electrical issues suck to deal with so I may just buy a 5 pin harness that snaps in between the factory harness and just be done with it rather than try to get the 7 pin working.

Its a 2001 Ford Excursion V10 4x4

Well, early 2000 fords were well known for their excellent electrical systems - so if stuff was working and is now not working then I would start cleaning contacts before something catches on fire ;)

However I would get a multimeter and make sure that it is actually your trailer wiring on the truck and not just a problem on the trailer like a bad ground.

Check your owners manual. Many times, the Ford trucks don't get shipped with the fuses installed for the towing wiring.

Re: 7 to 5 pin

or if it was added like the dum***** that wired my dodge, they used a 4-pin to 7 pin adapter and never wired the other 3 wires.

does your ford have a stock brake controller, if so, then the 7 pin may be wired correctly. if there is no brake controller, it was probably not wired correctly

Well its my trailer. I hooked a friends trailer up to the truck today and everything worked on his trailer. I need to replace the tail lights on the trailer so I am going to go ahead and just re-wire the whole thing.

Do yourself a favor and run ground wires to each light rather than just grounding the harness to the trailer frame and then grounding each light to the trailer frame. 99% of the time its a ground problem on trailers.

Speaking of grounds, check the ground connection on your trailer before doing anything drastic with the rest of the wiring.
