Motor ran fine last year but when we tried to start it this year, you could not get it to turn over. Is it rusted up or what? And what can be done to try to fix it.
Thanks, Dennis

Re: 7.5 Johnson locked up

Normally, outboards are winterized at season's end by spraying some fogging oil into the cylinders through the carburetor while the engine is running. You might be able to free up your motor by spraying some fogging oil or WD-40 into the cylinders through the plug holes (plugs out), and carefully turning the flywheel by hand (clockwise). Keep bumping the flywheel gently until the pistons move.

If the motor was stored out in the weather or something similar, the problem might be more serious -- but not necessarily fatal. (I guess I'm assuming your motor is stuck, based on your description. If you mean it cranks but won't fire, or there is a problem with the recoil starter, those are other issues.)

Good luck.

Oldboat,
that is correct, it is stuck. I'll give your suggestion a shot. Thanks

While I agree with oldboat I would squirt Marvel Mystery oil instead of WD-40. Stuff is great. Leave it sit overnight with the head up so that the oil seeps down into the rings. Turn over to get the oil out and attempt to turn it over. I would leave the plugs out and use a socket wrench on the crankshaft nut at the center of the flywheel. Use a bit of muscle if you have to.

Let us know how it works out.
