the pinion like gear that pops up and engages the flywheel when you pull the cord to start the engine is stripped out, not the teeth but the slot that rides up and down the pin. it still works but evry time i start it i gota pull the cover and lift it up by hand to get it engaged. can anyone tell me what this part is called and where i can buy a replacement? also is it an exspensive part

(Starter) pinion part 311189, available from any BRP dealer and lists for $14.99US.

Use this link to find a dealer in your area by selecting the third option and entering your area code: http://dealerlocator.evinrude.com/EN/?Rnd=1172157085156

BTW, a new roll pin is a good idea. Also, the shaft inside the pinion should be dry to work right.

Here's where you can lookup parts for your motor ...

www.shop.evinrude.com

Find the tab labled "Parts" on the opening page and go to it. You can select your model and year back to 1968, and you can lookup Johnson parts.

There is a wire spring that rides in a groove on the botom of the pinion. Friction from that spring is what makes the pinion go up. Is it there and in the groove?
