Hello Folks.
I have a 6hp Evinrude 65B66R/B07044.
This model is fitted with a rubber power outlet socket.
I would like to use this socket but need some help.
There are 3 wires to the socket feeding back up to charging coils under flywheel,so I guess I need a rectifier ?
Have looked in faqs and electrical section but unable to find any wiring information for this.
My workshop manual (not omc)is no help as it only shows std motor details.
So once again I guess its a question for the"wise ones".

Re: 6hp Power Outlet Wiring

If you just want to use it as AC power for lights then there is special way in which to connect up the three wires,

If you want to use it for battery charging then you need what is essentially a three phase rectifier. There may have been a kit of parts including a rectifier with a connector to plug into the socket. It may not now be available of course. It may be possible to fit a four wire rectifier.

Sorry to sound a bit vague but I make that model number a 1975 model but the parts lists do not show a stator coil for it. The option for a stator coil and a rectifier does not seem to appear until 1984 when CD ignition appeared on the 6Hp in place of points ignition. (I wonder could it have had a later type ignition system fitted, I dont know)

The circuits for wiring up AC lights and for a rectifier are below.

Assuming you don't want to part with a great pile of gold bars it is possible for someone with a little knowledge of electronics to build a suitable rectifier from 6 individual diodes.

The diagrams below show the wiring for AC lighting taken from my owners manual for an '84 model and the circuit for a rectifier which I drew to answer a question on another forum.

You may find that the charging kit for an '84 or later model can be fitted, or a rectifier and terminal strip from such a model fitted.

Sorry not the sort of direct answer i would have liked to have given

The wires labelled AC in the second diagram are the yellow, yellow/gray and yellow/blue wires shown in the 1st diagram. It does not matter which is which as far as the rectifier is concerned.

Re: 6hp Power Outlet Wiring

Hello Vic S.
Yes I Think I understand you,the 3 wires from charging coil, are all ac.
So I have to make up circuit to your drawing, using six seperate diodes solderd
into the grid to get dc +/- out of two wires.
Just one question on drawing#2.seems first ac wire is solderd to first vertical
wire in drawing and so on ?
Do I need any special type of diode or will the std radio shack ones do?
As I said the only manual I could obtain was a Clymer,OMC are no longer
available here,or in Australia.
Also omc dealers are thin on the ground most have gone over to Honda,Yamaha,
Mercury and Force Mariner products.
Anyway will build your device.
Thank you
Ray
Oh, will this system charge a battery?
To the person who replied "once again I refer you to the manual"
I have explained I cannot obtain an omc manual in UK
And if its bugging you me asking question on this forum.
Dont bother to answer my questions!
Or delete my membership then you can be sure I wont bother anyone with
my questions.(all six)

Hi Ray,

Just realised that you are in UK, didn't notice that last night!

Yes you have interpreted the diagram correctly.

Silicon diodes of a suitable rating. but I'm not I'm quite sure what. You dont have a Radio Shack in Staffs, & Tandy UK disappeared years ago. Maplin may have something, alternatively RS Components. They are going to have to be rated at least 5 amps, 50volts PIV will I think be adequate. On that basis P600A from Maplin I think will do or P600D which is 200V PIV.

Don't be short with Tashasdaddy though. He's one of the top dogs on this forum! His answer is correct.

You should be able to get an OEM manual from the US if they are available. Ken Cook is often quoted for manuals, or the people TD suggests. Maybe TD can advise on that score. Clymer and Seloc manuals are not rated very highly, putting it mildly! The folks in the US dont realise how difficult it is to get OMC stuff in the UK, or any outboard stuff for that matter.

In the UK Wills Marine in Kingsbridge Devon www.Willsmarine.co.uk are good for mail order spares. maybe they can help with a manual!

Alternatives www.outboards-direct.co.uk (Oakley Marine in Brighton) and www.outboardservices.co.uk in Lostwithiel.

The idea of the rectifier is to convert the AC to DC for battery charging but I guess the stator (still surprised one is fitted on a '75 model) is only rated at 5A but you only get that at high revs so battery charging may be rather disappointing. I have also fitted a small solar panel to augment it.

Reckon your motor is a European , Belgium, made one because the number does not come up on the BRP parts website.

Best boating forums in the UK are the www.ybw.com/forums forums run by IPC Media, Practical Boat Owner, Yachting Monthly etc. i Boats still tops for outboard advice though.

Good luck sorting something out, hope it works. I wont be around for a bit, should have gone into hospital today but the state of the local roads and the rail services into London have forced a postponement until tomorrow (fingers crossed) PM me here, or better via YBW, if you want but I'll only be able to reply at weekends for the rest of this month. VicS on YBW, no dot before the S.

Leave you with a picture of an '84 6Hp Yachtwin on my boat

Re: 6hp Power Outlet Wiring

This picture shows the OMC 4 wire rectifier (the round thing in the centre of the picture) and its associated terminal strip, in my Yachtwin. Both are screwed to the side of the block. That would be the ideal solution for you if possible but the rectifiers are not cheap.

Hello Vic.
Thank you for all your information and internet details, the only one I knew of
was wills marine.
You are right about motor being built in Belgium,it has OMC MARINE CORP
BELGIUM on the id plate.
I bought it brand new,and have used it on and off over the years, was going to moth ball it,did a compression test got 95lb on both cylinders thought this
engine will outlast me!
I have spent many hours on internet trying to get a genuine OMC manual, but so
far no luck.
Anyway over the last 2 months I took the motor apart and replaced all gaskets seals impeller and ignition parts.
As I have never had the generator working and with more snow outside, that
is my next job.
Will build your rectifier unit and seal it in an epoxy filled plastic box.
Like your boat! I just love sailing boats.
Hope everything is ok for you in hospital.
I was a bit snappy with my remarks, but I allways try to find the answers
myself,my last resort is to post a question on this forum.
Best regards
Ray.
