I have a 6hp Evinrude the model number is 6904E. The engine has been on a motor stand in my garage for two years and I noticed oily sticky film on the lower unit housing and a spot on the floor that appears to be coming from the bottom end. It's the split case bottom end and I'm trying to determine the exact year so I can trouble shoot and repair the problem. Prior usage has not revealed any leaks or lower end problems on this very reliable engine. This model has the shift linkage cover plate on the side of the shaft housing. Any help trouble shooting?? I don't know if I have just the seal between the two lower unit housing surfaces leaking or more serious internal seal problems. I have not yet drained and checked the lower unit oil.
This all started when I was contemplating replacing the water pump prior to placing the engine back in service. Please help

Thanks GeorgeN

Re: 6hp Evinrude ID+lower unit probs

George..... The engine is a 1979 6hp Evinrude. You say it has the side plate inspection plate for the shift linkage?? That's something I have yet to come across as all of the 6hp models I've worked on have the brass shift linkage connector right at the top edge of the lower unit.

But at any rate, drain the lower unit, then with compressed air, apply 7 to 12 pounds of air pressure to the unit. The leak should become evident either by sight or sound.
