Boat was running beautifully (30K @ 4000 RPM) until I moved throttle to neutral for a few seconds, raised and lowered the prop and then throttled slowly forward. The prop did engage and the boat move, but very slowly even though I gradually increased the RPMs to the max. The same was true in reverse. I checked, removed and re-installed the prop pins so I know they are okay. When I ran the boat out of the water, the prop does speed up when the trottle is advanced, it just doesn't seem to do it when it is in the water under a load. Any ideas? Is the problem somewhere between the I and the O? Are parts available for old Johnson I/Os? Remember, the boat was running perfectly fine before all this happened and still cruises at a nomenal speed even when the RPMs are showing the boat shoulod be running much faster.

Sounds like you spun the rubber hub in the prop. Prop repair shop can replace it.

Spun your hub.
If you pull the prop off the boat, turn it around and look at it. Between the outer ring where the fins attach and the heavy spined ring is a very hard rubber holding the two pieces together. The manufacturers do this so if you hit something, the prop will 'spin a hub' instead of shattering something in your lower unit.

It will idle around but as soon as you give it power , the engine races but no speed...Spun a hub.

thanks to everyone that replied to my call for help. It was a spun hub, which is something neither my mechanic (who was getting ready to tear into the outdrive and charge me a fortune) or I thought of this solution. Thanks, again

A mechanic who hasn't heard of spun prop hubs? That's a little scary. That's what you learn before you attend Marine Repair 101. I'm glad you didn't let him tear into the drive.

Good luck! Really.
