I have a manual shift johnson 40 hp from gulp, 1969! Runs for a while with little power then dies. Never to start again. Now it won't start at all. I hear clicking coming from the choke solenoid (not the starting solenoid - I just replaced it) and it will not turn over - however it will turn if I boost the starter with a live 12v wire. It clicks when I turn the key to start and it clicks when I push the choke button in. Could this be a bad choke solenoid or some other integral part, maybe the switch? Ready to go fishin but stranded!
thanks for any help.

Re: 69 johnson 40 problems

When you've got the starter working again try running the engine on one cylinder to see if you can isolate the problem to a particular cyl. Just disconnect and ground out the other spark plug lead. If it won't start, check spark. Both leads should be able to draw a nice 3/8" long spark.
Does the primer bulb get hard? What do your spark plugs (firing end) look like? Does the choke plate stay closed while your running?

PS - '69 is hardly even considered old around here. I see my '72 engine as downright modern. :D
