I have a 1969 Johnson 40 HP. I got this thing running pretty well in the driveway. Starts right up and then slows to a good idle. After running off the water hose, I decided to try her in the lake. It will start and then run for about 20 seconds and die - never to start again. This has happened 3 times now. Starts and runs fine at the house - fails miserably at the water. Maybe something to do with the water intake. Thanks for the help.

Has a lot to do with the water BD. When your out of the water, there isn't any back pressure on the cylinders. Don't take much to get her started and keep running.

Start with the low speed needle backed out about 1 1/2 turns. Have you adjusted the cam follower to the cam? Might as well tell us all ya' did to it....may help us get you going.

OBJ: Never touched anything with the cam. All I did was change the driveshaft, plugs, water pump. I have a carb that I just rebuilt and am planning on installing it soon. That maybe the problem all along. Thanks OBJ - could you elaborate on the cam follower. Thanks
