I am restoring a 69 boat and Johnson 40 hp - I have the motor working fine, however, I replaced a switch to the nav lights (I thought) and have run into a problem. This motor is set up to have an electric choke. One wire to the ignition and the other ground (I thought). I turned the thing over and the supposed ground wire caught fire. -oops. With that wire disconnected nothing happens when I turn the key. Afraid to do anything else until I get some adveice. Can anyone direct me to a colored schematic for this set up: that includes wiring for a ammeter, choke, overheat warning light, ignition, nav light switch. Or just tell me where the other choke wire goes. Thanks

You need a Repair Manual before you mess with it further, BD.

check here: http://www.boatmotors.com/manuals.html
or get an OEM manual from www.kencook.com.

Or you can just borrow one from your library.

Good luck. :)

Assuming all of the wires are leading from the engine/instrument wiring harness, what color are the wires?
