I have this old motor,a 69 johnson 40 hp 2 cylinder in a 65 runabout. It has no gauge for water temperature. Is this motor supposed to have a thermostat somewhere? If not how do I know before it fries itself? If yes, how can I hook it up to have a gauge on the dash? Thanks for the help!

Hello bdub.....how's it goin?

T-stat....look on top of the head. you'll see a triangular shaped cover held on with three bolts. The t-stat is under there.

Your controls should be equipped with an over heat device. If the controls, key and choke switch are the original dash mount, then you should have an overheat light there on the plate. If the light comes on, engine is in overheat. You can also connect an audible 12V horn into the system also as a back up.

Keep posting if ya' need more help.
