This motor will not start in neutral. I put it in gear and move the throttle a small amount and it goes. Runs smooth on high speed, no idle. Any thoughts?

Is it and electric shift lower unit?

4 possibilities. Idle circuit plugged up in carburetor. Carburetor/ignition synchronization off. Bad coils. Worn out motor. Start out with a compression check and spark test.

That's my guess since putting it in gear will disengage the lock and let the throttle open some more.

Appreciate the feedback. I have a carb kit and will start there. How do I check the carb/ignition synch?

you really need a manual to do it. when you rebuilt, did you do a total rebuild? if not has the engine ever been decarb with something like seafoam deep creep.

Carb has not been rebuilt. I have the manual. Used a fuel conditioner Evinrude 2 + 4 that is supposed to clean the carb. I know Seafoam, not "deep creep"..is that a separate product? The engine runs great at upper end, no hesitation from start to top end.

Re: 69 Evinrude 25hp only starts in gear

Like tashasdaddy said you'll need a manual to do it. But just for explanation....

Unlike say a lawn mower, instead of having controls that connect directly to the throttle, these old outboards do it a little different. The whole magneto rotates which advances the timing AND actuates the throttle by way of a cam/follower system that's part of the magneto assembly as it rotates. So in essence, doing the sync and link means you're setting up the starting point for when the throttle begins to open.

You'll need the manual because it'll explain exactly where that point is for your engine.

As you've probably noticed, you can only advance the timing (and thus open the throttle) only so far with the engine in neutral. Putting it in gear disengages the lock allowing it to be turned further. This could give you enough gas to run, but you'll run poorly because you're not using the correct amount of fuel for what number of degrees of timing advance you're at.

Disclaimer: I am by no means an expert, but this the way I understand it. d:)

Thanks for the detail, i386. I'll work on it when Minnesota winter closes in. Only a few remaining opportunities and I can use it as is for now.
Good luck with the restoration. My motor is on a 14' 1957 Crestliner Commodore. GPS had me at 25.4 mph. Wait'll I get it tuned...

Hey cool. If this old 33HP rude I have will make my 15 footer do 25 mph I'll be happy. Anything beyond that will be gravy. I've never ran the boat or motor before but considering the 300 or so pounds of wet foam I took out she'll be a lot lighter.

Good luck with your engine and let us know how it turns out.
