Try moving the tilt pin up one hole and your gas tank up forward. This my help you get up on a plane.

I've moved everything else up front. Swapped the batteries from lead acid to lithium ion to reduce weight (4 sets of 3s14p) for the trolling motor. Just need to measure how much new fuel line I need for the gas tank.

I'll raise the pin one knotch and report back tomorrow. Right now it's sitting parallel.

Neither. I watched your video, and that motor is performing normally, at least in the video.

It's set all the way down. Can't adjust it anymore.

Is there a way to get more cold air to the intake ?

I'll measure the RPM and report back.

How big is the boat? I just don’t know that your going to get much more out of this motor. Your likely just under powered.
I mean you could get into trying different props but even if you find a better match it’s more than likely not going to be that much of a difference but it’s not out of the question either. The motor sounds strong it’s just working hard. Try to find someone that has a supply of different pitches props that you can test out and see what happens.

Zodiac (France) Cadet 3.10 (meters) works out to 10'2"

The manufacturer recommends 15 hp max . Definitely feels under powered.

try running with the cowl off.... if much better it may be breathing it's own exhaust due to a poor sealing skirt down below just above the water pump


do a compression test and report back what you find. they are low compression engines but 65ps seems a minimum.

Why are we on this path without checking the basics? Are you running on one cylinder?
Pull each spark plug wire one at a time and see if performance changes. If it doesn't, then the cylinder isn't contributing. Are you misfiring, firing both cylinders but one out of phase? Put a timing light on each cylinder. Make your own marks if you have to. You should see nice crisp marks, no intermittent chatter or variations. If you have good spark, jumping a 3/8" air gap, you can still have a crappy spark plug killing a cylinder.
Check compression with another gauge. The lower the reading the more percentage error gauge-to-gauge. I've got '65 seems to be running well at 85 psi.

basics are not always basic to all and that motor does not sound to bad.

No expert but I have reworked several 9.5 & most had comp#s in high 60s to low 70s none were speed bombs .
these low compression engines were made to facilitate fishing- casting with their flat heads and easy storage on float planes but I doubt Mercury speeds were the goal .

just clean the HS carb jet ...& low speed circuit ..read Leroy's check ignition & condensers set throttle linkages (all) for full travel.

Sounds good. I just picked up a 78 Evinrude 9.9

The 9.5 has been a low profile, torque-y, compact , portable , lightweight (60 lb), RELIABLE outboard.

Funny you say that. When I was about 14, me and a camping buddy ran identical 12' tin boats on the salt chuck. I had a '73 9.5 and he had a '77+ 9.9. Two skinny kids and the boats were equal. Maybe I was skinnier?

That is a one in a million 9.5 that will keep up to the 9.9. Or a 9.9 on its last legs?
