'68 Evinrude 4 hrse. Does any one know where I can get parts for this engine. I need a tiller handle. Also, does anyone know the type of ignition this motor has? This is the fold-up engine, I believe a yachtwin.

You could probably get the tiller handle cheapest from an outboard junkyard. If you can't locate your local one, you can use an online one like:
Marine Parts Outlet or
Twin City Outboards or
Vintage

I'm not sure about the folding ones, but on the regular ones the tiller handle is little more than a bent peice of aluminium plate with a rubber handle. I can't imagine it would be very expensive. The ignition is dual Phelon type flywheel magneto, which partly to say breaker point activated. It's all up underneath the flywheel. You'll need a flywheel puller to get in there (a harmonic balancer puller and three 1/4"-20tpi bolts work, but an edge puller will destroy the flywheel), and a torque wrench to put the flywheel back on. Details are in the service manual.

Iboats sells all the ignition parts you're going to need. An ignition coil from them costs about $17 each - less for points and condensors. There really isn't much more that ever goes wrong with that ignition.

I think you've got the wrong year. In '68 those engines were still sold as 3hp. It wasn't till '69 that they developed 4hp out of them. Do you happen to have a model number there?
The folding engines are really clever and quite collectable - sounds like you've got a nice one there!

It was given to my dad just before he got married in oct. '69. It hasn't run in about 10 years & the last time I tried to start it there was no spark. Unfortunatly, I just put it back in the case b/c none of the marina's by me would touch anything over 20 years old. If I'm lucky all it needs is a new spark plug, if it needs more I feel more confident that I can fix now.

And yes that is exactly what the original tiller handle was.

I did accidently submerge the engine once...which was repaired by an envinrude dealer immediatly. Man, did I get into trouble for that one!!!

Those engines are well known for their toughness. They're also quite easy for the DIY to repair, as there's hardly any special tools required to work on them.
Worst case scenario with the ignition is you have to replace the whole thing. That would cost under $70 to fix with all new parts. If you're not familair with outboard engine parts prices, this is dirt-cheap.
The most frequent cause of ignition problems on these engines are cracks in the insulation of the ignition coils, causing them to either absorb water and go dead, or arc over at higher rpms. A visual examination is all you need to do to find problems. But perhaps the points just need to be cleaned and adjusted. When all is well, you'll be able to draw a 3/8" long spark from the spark plug lead.

I forgot about this link in the last post:
3 / 4hp tuneup article, click here.
I've got a '72 4hp (non-folding) I use all the time - great engine now that it has a new ignition and it's firing on both cylinders. You may want to have a look at the oil mix FAQ in the Engine FAQ Forum, there's some information that pertains to your engine.

ALOE68........

I have a 1968 6 HP. parts motor, with the tiller handle and a number of other good items. E-mail me if you would like a picture of the handle.

I have kept this motor for a number of years, just to "bone it out." (It has a bad power head)

Rednekroad@aol.com

...Bob in Calif...
