Hi all, need a bit of help.

My father inlaw bought a boat and motor combo for when he's out our way. We've had it out a few times without servicing it and all went fine till last trip when it stalled and wouldn't stay running.

So, just got done doing a tuneup on it and now it runs great except it's not pumping water, it was before!

I checked the thermostat and it works(opens and closes).I checked the intakes and they seem to be clear.

I tried to remove the lower unit as I do with my 40hp but something is keeping me form dropping it. I get about a 1/4" where I can see the splice bracket for the shift rod but that's it.

With this motor, it looks like ya have to take the whole thing apart just to get to the impeller. How do you get to it?

Nope, just put it in reverse and it should drop down low enough to get one of the coupler bolts out. Other than that, same as your 40hp.

Hi Paul!

Is a 1/4" usual? Had it in reverse, can't hardly get a screwdriver in there.

Thanks for the fast reply!

It should go down further than that. Perhaps the driveshaft is frozen in to the crankshaft. If that's the case, the lower unit won't drop down any further between neutral and reverse.
If it appears the driveshaft is stuck in the lower unit, try driving hardwood wedges (or some such thing) between the lower unit and the midsection. The worst that will happen is the impeller key will tear through the water pump housing.

LOL,

"The worst that will happen is the impeller key will tear through the water pump housing."

That's funny!

Thanks Paul, I know what your saying, I'll give it a go.

Alrighty then, got the lower unit off! Broke the housing and the shaft is firmly inserted in the powerhead.

Have ordered the impeller and housing, but gonna have trouble with that shaft.

Instinct tells me, "get a bigger hammer"! But I know better than that, now what?

Follow Walker's instructions here:
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=033328

The key here is a good penetrating oil. I usually find them kind of useless because they don't do anything to aluminium corrosion (white powdery stuff). But here you're dealing with steel and they work quite well.

Another good one:
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=005699

This is the big reason you'll hear people say to change the water pump every 2-3 years. It gives you a chance to regrease the splines and excersise the bolts so they come out easy next time. Coat all your screws with sealer and they won't sieze on you.
