drained gear oil and there is definitely water in the oil, so it looks like a seal is out somewhere, motor sat with no gear oil in lower unit for 1 winter, next winter she wouldnt go into gear, my theory is somethin corroded a bit and is now seized up. have not had er openned up yet, actually i am in the process of that rightnow before i started i wanted to ask for some advice, for one on any ideas if i am on the right track, and for two is there anything I should know about dismantling and putting back together the lower unit, and where to start, thanks

My educated guess is the clutch dog is rusted/siezed on the shaft. If that is true, you probably have a bucket of rusted bearings too. You will know when you get in there.

It would be kind of much to type out the service manual for you. But it's pretty straight forward, if you have mechanical skills. One thing that will give you a fit if it has been used in salt water is the two long studs that hold the upper and lower gearcases together. They often have to be sawed in two to get it apart. Knowing where to saw is another thing.

I had a customer yrs ago do the same thing you are dealing with and when I took the g/c apart it was junk.
