UPDATE & HELP NEEDED: Boat has been at repair shop for last 1.5 weeks. They said the slow speed needle is broken and they cannot remove it to replace it. They said i need a new $400 carb which they do not make anymore. Told me they cannot help me and to maybe find a used one on Ebay.

Does this really make sense? There must be a rebuilt kit for this? After reading much of the manual, the nice thing about this engine, the manual actually tells you how to test and repair each part, instead of today's method of disposing and buying new.

I am a novice to boating repair, but have a feeling they just do not want to repair this old boat and that this can be repaired.

The needle/seat uncrews out of the carb.

Check these guys for a replacement.

Re: 67 Evinrude 40hp - broken high speed needle

Thanks but the problem is that the needle tip is broken off and inside. They could not get it removed. They said the only solution is to replace carb.

Is this true?

It is the slow needle, not fast.

Can't the carb be removed and taken apart to get it out? I asked them but they said they could not do.

please help.

Re: 67 Evinrude 40hp - broken high speed needle

The high speed needle is blunt. It would be impossible for it to break.

Giving them the benefit of the doubt, perhaps there's a misunderstanding or other confusion. But perhaps this is something you can handle yourself better than them. $400 sounds like a PFO estimate to me.

Even if you do need a whole new carb, they should be easily and cheaply found used since they're really a non-wearing part.

I think the last year an adjustable high speed needle was used on a 40hp was 1960 or 61. Later models were all fixed jet.

Well, there sure is one way to tell if you have a problem...get your motor back and pull the carb. Even for a novice, it's an easy thing to do. Open 'er up and have a look. I agree with Paul, it's a hard thing to break a blunt needle in it's seat.

Its the slow speed needle, not fast, if that makes any difference.

Yeah, that does make a difference. Sorry about that, must have been the heat. :(

The carb kit comes with a new soft plug, so it should be possible to remove the remnants of the old needle by pushing it back through there. Though I doubt it would be a whole lot of use. If the needle is broken, likely the seat is wrecked too.

$15 carb, probably cheaper than a new needle:

Where else can I find a used carb? I did not win this auction. Why can I not just fix the needle?

Re: 67 Evinrude 40hp - broken slow speed needle

Well, you do have a couple of options.

Find a replacement needle.

Have a local machine shop re-taper the one you have. As long as there's enough shaft length to allow it.

Find a replacement carb.

As Paul mentions, it depends on the condition of the needle seat too. It's a crap shoot. Removing the core plug and removing the broken needle tip shouldn't be difficult.

Re: 67 Evinrude 40hp - broken slow speed needle

Here is one way I haved fixed that problem, that is if this a carb from the older twin cylinder. With the carb removed, remove the soft plug on the top of the carb. You will see the hole where the needle come's into this cavity. Drill a hole on the back side of this cavity the size of, or slightly larger then the needle valve hole. Drive out the broken needle valve tip with a steel pin. Make the pin from the shank of a drill bit if nothing else is handy. Drive a lead slug of solder into the drilled hole, and replace the core plug. Don't worry about any slight damage where the needle was stuck. That needle is adjustable, and the engine will never know the difference. Don't worry about the lead slug, it's a lot smaller then that core plug you have to drive back in. I did'nt catch at first that this was a twin forty. This method will work just fine

Re: 67 Evinrude 40hp - broken slow speed needle

I agree with all that is said above. My low speed needle (same motor) was no longer pointed, it had a ridge. I manually reshaped it with fine sandpaper and an emery board and acheived the desired conical shape. It works just fine. I too could not find the replacement needle. It works. Just make sure you sand or shape slowly moving the needle in a circular fashion, meaning rotating the needle so you dont create any flat or oblong spots...eye ball it good... As mentioned in the last post there is extra lenght on the needle so you can reshape it.

Good luck

Sam
