G'day my evinrude won't start without ether spray into the sprak plug holes. i have checked ignition sealed the crank cases checked float level aven switched floats but it wont start unless you use ether spray. but once it starts it will run fine and when you stop it and start it again the fly wheel spins 1 quarter turn and its started. i cant think of anything else causing this starting problem un less float level is wrong. once the engine has been left for 40 mins it wont start again. any ideas?

wait and a pro will come along
i would think if you have to use spray it might be fuel mixture promblem or bad compression if it wont start after 40 min. have you check comp

Three things that I know of will cause your symptoms:

1) Too lean a fuel mixture for cold starting. IE Choke issues.

2) Weak Spark. Either bad plugs, points/condenser or coil. Spin motor with plugs removed from head but connected to wires. Inspect the spark. Orange colored spark is weak. White/blue spark is strong. Make sure plugs are gapped properly.

3) Low compression. Do a compression check. On an old motor, a de-carb may be in order to loosen up a stuck ring. Search forums for info on 'seafoam' and 'decarb' etc. Look in plug holes with flashlight for obvious cylinder wall scoring problems or missing edges of piston top.

These are basic engine problems. Someone here who is familiar with your specific motor will give you a more indepth diagnosis. Until then, check out the above.

Regards,

Mark.

Do not use ether as there are no lube qualities in it. Keep a mister bottle of premix if you have to prime it. If you continue to use ether you are going to damage the old girl. Are you sure that your primer bulb is working and fuel is getting in the carb?

I usually find that it's the initial fuel feed that causes this problem. Make sure the primer bulb pumps up snug. Check the choke plate closes fully. Make sure the fuel lines are tight and none have become hard and have lost their grip on connections.

The float needs to be set level with the float bowl gasket surface. Check this with the carb upside down. If by chance the carb still has the cork type float, it would be a good idea to get a carb kit, OEM type, and rebuild the carb with the new float.

Reset the needles. Run the needles in until they gently seat. Turn the low speed needle out 1 1/2 turn. Turn the high speed needle out 1 turn. Start the engine and let it warm up. Put in gear and set the high speed needle for best top end speed. Throttle down and set the low speed needle for best idle being careful not to set it at to lean a mix.

Check the spark. The spark at each cylinder should jump a gap of at least 3/8" with a hot white spark.

Keep us posted as to what you find....thanks.

The engine has good compression andhas hardlybeen used low speed needle isfine i think its the choke plate cause it does shut fully becas i had to make another nob and it slips. i doubt its with fuel bulb cause it goes hard

The choke plate has to close fully or you won't get the rich mixture you need to start when cold.

In your original posting, you also stated that if you let it set for 40 minutes or so, you still have a hard time starting. It should fire right up after running and setting for a while. Have you checked all fuel lines for being plyable and have good connection fits?

You may have worn pistion skirts. If the skirts are wore it will not pull fuel in when cold. A warm piston expands some and makes a better seal on the skirt. You will have great compression but the engine has no vaccume to pull the fuel in. Like stated above make sure the choke stayes fully closed while the engine is cranking
