I'm in the process of rebuilding my 15hp due to a head gasket failure whick allowed salt water to enter the upper cyl and it froze after not being run for a few weeks. In looking at the parts manual,it shows a baffle between the powerhead and lower unit.Mine doesnt have it and its no longer available from OMC.Does anyone know what purpose is serves and is it a vital part? Motor ran well before without it. Thanks

Hi Rick,

Are you tallking about a Gasket? I looked in my Clymers manual and that is the only thing I can see that your motor would have between the power head and the lower unit. I think that you probably would need a gasket there to keep the exhaust from leaking back into the cowling. I'm guessing that you could use a good form a gasket sealant or something like it to use. With my 59 'Rude alot of the gaskets are not available anymore so I had to make it myself. Not difficult but time consuming. Good Luck.

Terry

Actually,it calls for two gaskets. One above and one below this baffle plate. Its a canadian made model and the same as the 18hp US model of that year. The plate is pictured in the '63 18hp parts catalog I have also.
