My little 9.5 still will not idle.

The motor is now running hot. Not severely, but it will burn me if I touch the head.

It is pumping water.

I had the low speed screw backed out an entire 14 turns after initial adjustment. No improvement.

It runs perfectly at WOT, and runs mildly better after I open the throttle to WOT, but soon after returns to it's same old problem

Will run okay for a few seconds, then will pop. Then will run fine, and pop. It repeats this over and over again.

Carb was rebuilt, new spark plugs, tried both J6C and autolite 351s, new breaker points and condensors.

I'm lost here guys.

I just boiled the thermostat. It works.

Lemme just edit that post to have the link to the picture instead of having it in the post.

Now, as for the idle problem, I have checked the hose and it is not the source of the water.

I also couldn't imagine the hose causing my problem.

Course you probably know something I don't. Or a lot of somethings.

The idle needle needs to be a lot tighter.Initial setting is 1 1/2 turns out. From there, turn it in(tighter) until the rpm goes up and the engine runs smooth.By turning it out,you make the mix far too rich.

I hate to say it, but I hope you are right and I am just that dense. But would running to rich make it run hot?

Okay, the idle mixture screw has No effect. None whatsoever.

The engine absolutely refuses to run properly at anything below 1200 rpm.

I have now tried Leaning the mixture out, and richening it, as I said before as far as 14 turns out from initial setting.

It is also running hot enough to burn me when I touch the head.

This is not an adjustment issue. This is something else.

Re: 67' 9.5 will not idle, and is running hot.

I've been looking at a few things now.

One, Motor mounts move with a thunk and not much felt resistance fore and aft.

Replacement is necessary.

Two, It appears there is oil on the gasket between the cylinder and crankcase.

Redo this gasket.

Three, the head gasket is known to be ripped. Sealing it seems, but ripped.

New head gasket.

Four, the gasket between the intermediate and inner exhaust cover is leaking.

Replace these gaskets.

Sounds like loads of fun.

Wow, was really hoping somebody would tell me I didn't need to do all that.

Oh well, guess I ought to just rebuild it while I'm at it.

try taking the low speed needle all the way out to make sure the tip isn't broken inside the carb..Good luck.

Low speed isn't broken off. Though it does have a ring part way up the valve face. May need to reface it but not really sure how to do that.

By the way, the motor seems to blow some whitish smoke when it has the idle trouble.

white smoke= steam =head gasket.
As for the the low speed needle, buying another needle is the right thing to do.

Hmm, head gasket. That would explain some things.

If one or maybe even two of your cylinders is/are very clean, then you have a head gasket and/or head warping problem.

The head gasket was suspect anyway, since the head had once been removed and replaced without the gasket being replaced.

So, a new head gasket and we will see how it runs afterward.
