I have this engine and haven't had any problems all summer. Got boat from friend who hasn't used it in years. Got it running good took it down the WI River here in Point and ran for about 2 weeks with no problems at all. Last Friday went to take the family out and it started up like normal, dropped the throttle to idle and it died out. 2 hours of trying later and it never started again. The next AM I took it back out and this time tried a little gas into the carbs and it started on that gas but died right back out. Tried again today and I'm getting same results. I took the fuel pump off tonight and cleaned it and have pressure going out of the fuel pump. Any advise I can get would be helpful, at a complete loss as it ran GREAT a week ago with no problems. I am not the most mechanically inclined guy in the world, have no idea how to rebuild a carb and there is no service manual for this engine anywhere near me other than buying one, so please use simple terms, thanks for any help you guys can offer.

Welcome kaltenbrun!

Honestly didn't know any of these old downdraft V4's still existed........d:) Just kidding.

Look at the bottom of the carb for two slotted bolt heads. Behind these are the fuel jets. Take one out and pump the primer bulb. You should get a flow of fuel from the open hole.

If not, the inlet needle may be stuck closed. Sometimes....just sometimes, you can tap the side of the carb and get them to unstuck. But the best thing to do if it is stuck is rebuild the carb and install a new needle and seat. Now these downdraft carbs ain't the most user friendly to rebuild for a novice and a manual would be a must. Most likely the carb hasn't been touched in years and needs a good overhaul.

Thanks for the reply. You may not believe this, but 3 taps with the hammer on the side of the carb and away she goes. Working like a dream again. Going to need to get my hands on a manual though so I can rebuild it.

Thanks for the input!!

Kaltenbrun, come tap on my boat engine and see if it starts up. I'm up here in Wausau.
