I was wondering on how hard it is to change the head gasket on a '66 Merc 1100SS inline 6. I was running it on muffs with the cowling off and noticed small bubbles coming out from between the head and block. I checked if it might have been water but it was fuel coming out. I dont have a compression tester, but I figured since it was leaking, I wouldnt need to use one anyway.

Thanks in advance!

There is no head gasket on the inlines, they have a blind hole.
The plate you are looking at is the cover to the water jacket. You may be opening up a can of worms if you try and remove the cover, I would cleaning it up and patching it with permetex black...

It can't be fuel.. like he said, it's only a water jacket cover, not a head.

Thanks for the responses! Its a relief to know that it might not be as bad as I had imagined. So if its the waterjacket, would carefully tightening the bolts down cure the problem or should I go with the PermaTex? Or just leave it alone?

It all depends on the corrosion on her if she is a fresh water beast and is not corroded you could try and remove it and add a new gasket....
