65hp question - can a 55hp lower unit fit?

Was given a 65hp o/b. Needs a drive shaft and lower unit. One outfitter suggested that a 55hp gearcase would fit and offered a rebuilt one for $750. Does this sound correct? Is there any hope in trying to find an original lower?
My research shows this unit (model 659 H8B ser. 2337) was only made one year. It's a 2 cyl, has the engine and tower but thats all. I found the prop(badly damaged)don't know if it can be repaired.
Perhaps this is why it was given to me for the taking. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

44

Have you checked this iboats.com site? It offers lower units for sale.

Is yours a 1978? I dont think a 55 lower unit will work on that motor but a 60 hp might. It looks like the drive shaft has a different type of spline on the 65. Also the 55HP is a two piece lower unit and the 65 is a one piece.

Re: 65hp question - can a 55hp lower unit fit?

I'm guessing that a 65hp lower end will fit on a 55 hp engine. I have a 45 hp engine with a 65 hp lower end on it. On the diagrams of 45, 55, 65 hp units there was not difference in the case except for the waterpump housing which doesn't make any difference as long as it works. It should fit.
Don't pay 750 bucks for a lower end rebuild. There's old Chryslers out there. Check on Ebay. I bought my complete parts engine for $75 and the lower end was in great shape...
That earlier response about one and two piece was not exactly correct. The 65hp lower end is also a two piece. I have on on my boat.
