After doing a compression test, I found out that I my 1965 Mercruiser, four cylinder, 2.5 L has a crack. I have taken it to 4 different places. Half of them say that it is not fixable and the other half say it can be repaired

you can also buy a new to you head. the motor first started life in the chevy II in 1962 (153 cubic inch) however you may be able to find a 3.0 liter from carb to prop cheap as well.

Thank you, do you think that taking it to a machine shop and fixing it is an option? So if I want to search for a rebuilt or new head, what should I be looking for? Do I search for a chevy II engine? I was told that it is the same engine at the 64 Nova.

Ayuh,.... Gettin' it "Fixed" at a machine shop is at Best, a 50/50 shot,....

Ya gotta search for a 2.5l, or 3.0l Boat motor head,.....
Merc, Volvo, 'n OMC all used the same base Chevy motors,...
The 3.0l head will run, just Fine, on the 2.5l motor,...

Thanks guys, I did not find too many on ebay but I did find some. Do they need to be the same part # 382443?

Problem... That part number is not valid, but -38243 comes back as a flywheel stud, for a 66 Renault engine. :noidea:
The correct number for your cylinder head is 936-5319, and it's NLA ex Merc.
Maybe the number you are quoting is a casting number?

Juat a thought on trying to fix it... That is more like a very last resort for exotic items that do not have parts out there anymore, just sayin'... Good Luck!

Sorry the part # is 3824433. I found are really nice one rebuilt on ebay $475 but that is a little over my budget right now. I found a few other but they had different part numbers. Everything else was the same.

Thanks

Be careful selecting a head as there are 4 or 5 that will bolt on the block, but the ports are not all configured the same, different shaped ports and some of them siamesed. Make sure to get the one that will match the ports on the manifold, I'm guessing it's the siamesed port head, the 2.5L GM automotive head for the 60's.

I see 120's on craigslist all the time from 200$ to maybe 500 complete.Be cheaper to go that route and either use the head and keep the rest for parts or just swap and go.

Thanks for the advise, I am going to email the guy on car-part.com and consider that 192 he has. Seems like a pretty good deal.
