65 Mercruiser 120 hp vs 78

I have a chance to buy a Mercruiser 120hp engine out of a 1965 boat, this will replace the 78 Mercruiser 120hp that is in my boat now are these engine the same ? will the swap work ?

I do not beleive the head / manifold is the same. Does your carb bolt to a pie plate, and then to the cast iron manifold, or does you carb bolt direct to the manifold?

Also do you have studs with nuts, or do you have thru bolts.?

Id you are just concerned about the main block, then yes.

Ayuh,... By using the parts off the motor that's now in the boat, you should be able to cobble the older motor in, using pieces of Both....

Couldn't he get a 140 hp from near the same year and gain 20Hp? We swapped a 68..120 hp with a factory rebuilt 140 from the 70's and it dropped right in...no other changes required.

Yes he could if he wanted too...

I have yet to find a good 140HP. 120HP seem to just show up everywhere. Best of luck, and I think it is worth looking for a 140HP.
