So I'm aware I got off on some spines. I've tried putting in neutral reverse and forward. Not sure what to do now. How do I get lined back up? I've taken it off and put it back on about 6 times now. Figured all I could do was ask. Thanks for any help.

Make sure the lower unit is in neutral. Prop spinning freely in both directions. Put upper shift in neutral and do the same. Make sure the shift rods are aligned - the upper can move side to side a bit on that model. A long, thin screwdriver can aid in moving the upper shift rod into place, slid between the saddle bracket and exhaust housing where the upper rod is visible.

Did you check the shift Cam on lower unit was in the right position before reinstalling it's located in front of the impeller housing... i have a 73 650 3 cyl and the manual says the shifter should be in foward before removing and installing lower unit. I had a similar problem after installing a new Impeller and housing and shift cam... My shift cam was broken in 3 pieces when I disassembled the lower unit and was not sure how it went back so it took me a few attempts to get it right.

Follow the instructions on the first page of this forum; put grease on the DS and shift shaft splines.

Ok so I have it back on and yes you needed help getting it back on that little shaft for the shifter. I haven't gotten it it water. Motor off there was forward nuetral and reverse. Motor on it didn't seem like there was nuetral but I'm not sure that without water slowing down the propeller I would notice since I was trying to do it fast without my water bucket. Sound like everything is back on right?

With motor not running, you should be able to easily figure out if you have full gears. In neutral, the propeller will spin freely. In forward the propeller will turn clockwise with a ratcheting noise and will not turn counterclockwise without turning the motor over (DO NOT TURN OVER THE MOTOR WITH THE PROPELLER!! IT MAY START AND WILL REMOVE FINGERS!!) In reverse, it will lock in both directions with a few degrees of free movement.

Awesome I'm good to go then. Yes I was concerned about the motor turning over when I turned it over by hand. All digits still attached. Lol
