My brother is looking at a boat with this motor the model is 65esl-72s I assume this is a 1972, does the esl stand for electric shift ??? Also, there is a long pc of metal that joins the motor to the steering cable ,it is completely rusted as are the bolts that secure it to the motor.what is involved in replacing this pc and are they bolts or studs that secure this pc to the motor . It attatches to the motor between the power head and motor leg . thanks for any info

65ESL72S 65HP, Electric Start, Long shaft, 1972. If this is an electric shift model, a spring/clutch repair job could run $600 if needed. The steering tongue is about the strongest part on the motor, try navel jelly and a paint job. The old steering had a ball and socket, you need to get rid of it, if is still on the steering. A new aircraft type swivel socket is what you buy now (safe) but not cheap. I hope this is a project and not
a first ski boat, I would want a little newer rig.
Backfire :)
