Hello all
I have a 65 hp evinrude (older model mid 70's i believe)The problem is it sat for about 2 years and will not move the boat faster than about 1/5 full throttle.I drained the old gas and ran new all through the system till it came out holes to drain the bowls. On land with the clamps on it runs wide open great,in the water in nuetral it runs wide open great but when in the water and in gear it will just barely push the boat along(i mean very slow)Prior to the motor sitting i had to run it with the cover off or it would starve for air? and die out but ran great without the cover,Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated
Happy and safe boating to all

Sounds like you need to clean the carbs. Also check to see that the air intake holes are clear & allowing air to flow into the powerhead cover.

I'm with Backlash, Mikey. Your symptoms are classic fuel starvation: seems okay with no load on it but wont make power under load. In addition to cleaning your carbs, overhaul your fuel pump and replace your impeller. You don't seem to have any cooling problems. . . yet. If she sat for 2 years you will.

The problem with not running with the cover on could be air intake blockage, but is more often exhaust gasses getting under the cover and into the air intake.

Let us know what happens.

Red sky at night.
JB
