the old starflite is giving me fits!new coil new, switch(ign) hooked up properly and no how no way can i get spark from either the plugs or coil.am i missing something simple?anything in that large junction box that could cause problems?everthing is plugged in ,how about the stator ?i did the elect tests for the low values and they are ok and honestly im not sure how to use my digital tester for the high values?do you set the thing on 2000k for ohms?

Are you grounding out your coils? Black wires coming from the coils together by mistake, recheck the switch wiring.

'63 Starflite has battery ignition. Works exactly like an old car. It doesn't get any simpler than that.

Check to make sure you have voltage at the + coil terminal when key is on. Voltage will vary according to whether the points are open or closed, because it goes through a resistor. But should be 6-12V. If you have that, it is getting through the junction box and all the plugs-ns, etc. But if you don't have it, backtrack till you find where you are losing it.

Once you establish that you have voltage to the coil, and still have no spark from the coil tower, it has to be the breaker points--or wire going to them.

If you have spark from the coil tower but not at the spark plugs, it has to be a problem in the distributor cap or rotor.

Like I say, it is a simple system. The stator has nothing to do with ignition spark. Neither does the stuff in the junction box, other than the plug-in and wires condition.

ok fr ive bought a new coil and as they said in the book because resistance is built in to auto coils (accell) to disconnect the resistance wire(pos).i will do all the tests youve said tomorrow or as soon as i can .according to the book you dont kneed a wire to the positive of the coil if you use a coil with the resistance allready built in ?so if i undersand correctly if i had bad points the coil wouldnt fire either?according to wiring diagram the positive has the resistance wire the neg side of the coil has a black wire going to the distrigutor and a grey wire that goes back through the harness.

OK, SEEM TO BE GETTING SOMEWHERES WITH MY VERY LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF ELECTRONICS.I went to the garage and hooked up the original coil with the resistor wire and checked for voltage.Im getting 11.29 on the positive side and the same on the neg side with the key on.So im thinking the coil is good but the no spark from it has me baffled. If i understand FR correctly the points would need to be good to get coil spark?Do i now test the black wire going from the coil to the points?

ok ,i adjusted points and got a spark for a second!thats at least getting somewheres.now its back to not sparking at the plugs for sure though not 100 percent sure about the coil.still getting 11 plus volts all the way to the points though,so can we deduce that the points are pooched?

Either clean and polish those points shiny bright and gap them to .020" or replace them. If you are going to clean them, take them apart and do each contact individually.

think i will replace them as i dont really like the looks of one of them!your right about it being a basic system ,when i thought about it and did what you said it was pretty basic.elect was never my strong suit!so lets just say for the heck of it i wanted to get a cap and rotor where in the world would i get it?plug wires and tune up kit i can get right here at iboats for sure.id love to slap this motor on the back of the boat in the avatar next spring if possible and if not expensive or i guess i will have to stick with the 90.

The distributor cap is part number 580327, and the rotor is part number 580338. Go to www.sea-way.com for the phone number and give them a call for the prices. I suspect you won't be replacing them "just for the heck of it".
