I'm hoping to secretly drop off my sportwin later tonight to a deserving student of mine that lives nearby as a Christmas gift.
It has new coils, new plugs, wires, starter cord, starter grip, points, condensers, l.u. oil, impeller, etc., along with a tank of gas and fuel line. Today after getting it all ready and testing it for the first time, I couldn't get it to go wide open unless I adjusted the high speed needle fully closed, and still it didn't seem like it was full throttle. I recleaned the carb and put a bottom carb body half from a fastwin on it and ran it again. It ran really nice, smoothly accelerated, idled great, and had the full amount of power. Still, I needed the high speed needle fully closed. The needle wasn't grooved, and the donut gasket was on the high speed nozzle. I've never seen a motor that would even run with the high speed needle closed. Can anyone guess at the problem? Will it harm the motor to run it like this? I'm tempted to go ahead and deliver it late tonight since it runs so perfectly.
Ideas would be greatly appreciated,

Re: '63 sportwin carb question

If the fuel isn't going in through the high speed needle, how is it getting in there? My guess would be the fuel pump diaphragm, except you say it runs so well. Beats me.

Are you sure that nozzle gasket is sealing? Maybe it isn't being squeezed.

Re: '63 sportwin carb question

Thanks F-R,
I've already snuck it by his house , but since I see the little booger every day, I'm sure I'll be getting another look at it if it fouls up. I don't understand it running so well like that. Now that you mention it, I seem to remember the nozzle gasket didn't look normal. I'll bet the previous owner used the wrong gasket on it.
At least I'll know a couple of things to look for. Suprisingly, the darned thing sure did run nice. I hated to see it go because I've wanted one for myself for quite a while and it was in really good shape for a local motor.
Merry Christmas!!!
