Well i think i may have the coughing resolved, but while riding yesterday ANOTHER problem showed up (will it ever end??).
After running a while i pulled up to a beach area and killed the boat just to chill for a while. After hanging out a little bit i got back in the boat and (thank goodness for electric start) it took a while before it would crank. It would turn over for a while then finally pop off as though a switch has been flipped. I checked several times on the way back to the landing and the problem persisted. Any ideas what could be causing to it to suddenly (almost violently) pop off like that? Once running, it has a tough time idling but runs fine aside from that.

How does the ignition system look in that bugger? If there is a fault in the ignition system, they act up, when you're out in the water and run fine at home in a barrel. You likely have a bad connection in the spark plug leads and/or coils and need to thouroughly check things over.
