'63 evinrude sportwin questions HELP!

Hey guys, new to the forum and boating as well. I had a 12' v hull given to me by my grandmother and it came with a 63 evinrude sportwin 1ohp outboard. I don't know how long it sat in their basement before I got a hold of it but I followed everyone's instructions and rebuilt the carb, new coils, plugs and recoil spring. Fired it up and ran like a top, until this weekend... Usually it would start on the 2nd pull everytime, tried to take it out saturday and it just wouldn't fire for about 5 minutes.. once it fired it ran great, got to my fishing spot, fished for a couple hours, didn't want to start again. Once I got home, I pulled the plugs, not fouled, still clean. What could be the issue? Also, where should my low speed and high speed adjustments be? Like I said, new to boating and have no experience with this stuff. Any insite would be awesome. Thanks guys.

HI gingersnap. Welcome to iboats. Cool old motor you got there. I used to have a '61 10 hp Johnson myself. Considering the motor sat for so long it probably needs a good all around tune up including a carb rebuild, ignition rebuild, new water pump(impeller, and possible lower unit seals. Don't worry, I know it sounds like a lot, but you can do all the work yourself with a 7/16" wrench and a flat head screwdriver (literally). You also get any and all parts you may need right there at iboats for about $20 each. Here are some great links that can walk you through the various jobs. Holler if you get stuck.

I already rebuilt the carb, installed new coils and plugs, there are no leaks in the seals or anything. Since im new to boating i wonder if I am priming the bulb too much and flooding the engine. Everytime I have taken it out before it has been on low fuel in the tank, this last time I filled the tank and there was a lot more pressure in the build than before.. could this be the problem?

Probably not. You should be able to squeeze the primer bulb prior to start up until it gets firm. It will then get soft as the motor runs. You can't really flood it unless the float pin is stuck, in which case you'd see fuel pouring out of the carb throat. Considering you've done so much work already, I would take a step back and reconfirm the Big 3: Spark, Fuel and Compression.

Spark- should be able to jump a 1/4" gap using a proper gap tester from the auto store ($5). Points should be perfectly clean and set to .020", Run champion J4C spark plugs set to .030", using 7mm COPPER core spark plug wires.

Compression- probably ok considering it will start and run at all, but should be over 80 psi and both cylinders should be within 10% of each other.

Fuel-make sure carb is squeaky clean, especially behind the welch plugs. Run 24:1 mix (5.5 fl. oz. of TCW-3 marine outboard 2-stroke oil to 1 US gallon of 87 octane gas). Shuold be able to squeeze the primer bulb prior to start up until firm. It will then go soft as the motor runs. If it fails to get firm, or you have to manually squeeze the bulb to keep the motor running, then the fuel pump is probably bad.
