Hello I just bought a nice little 1963 Evinrude 5.5 HP model 5302A. Motor is in very good condition, but has been sitting around for several years. The motor will not start unless you spray it with srating fluid and then it only runs a second or two... I suspect that maybe the carb is gummed up or ???

Any ideas ?

Thank you in advance....

Sounds like a dirty carb to me. The carb kit for your motor is part number 439071 or Sierra 18-7043. I suspect you could get one here from iboats.

Check that float.....not sure about yours but my 61 had a cork float that was shot. Replace it with a new plastic one if you do have this.

Don't use starting fluid as it has no lubrication.
Use a spray bottle of 24:1 pre-mix.

That carb kit should have a new float in it.

Doubt the sierra one will, usually only OMC will come with the float.

Bk is most likely right. Always a good idea to ask. The float alone has a part number of 396514.

The carb kit I got a few days ago didn't have float either. It was a napa kit. My float is cork also.Gas was pouring out of the carb but it would run.
