I got my old 1963 5.5hp Evinrude running today after 10 years sitting in the garage. I rebuilt the carb, new fuel pump, new fule filter and lines, changed the gear oil in the lower unit. Put it in the tank and she fired right up, however I noticed that she was not pumping water, so I shut it down after about 20-30 seconds. I went for a restart and noticed that the pull start is very hard to pull now.
I removed the plugs and tried again and no differance it pulls just as hard. Any idea out there ?

Thank you in advance...

drop the lower unit, and have a look at the impeller, it may have come apart. with the lower off, try pulling the motor again, just to verify if the problem is at the lower unit, or at the powerhead.

Thank you I will do that, I should have replaced it anyway, I hesitated because on this one the power head has to come off .

Could it be that you, being 10 year older, just can't pull her as hard as you did back then?:) I have that sort of problem every day.

Is it possible that it did some overheating to the cylinders? Anyway you can test compression?

Re: 63 Evinrude 5.5 hard to pull

I found the problem I kinda stumbled on to it though. I had planned on replacing the impeller, but on this model the power head has to be removed so the shift rod nut can be accessed. I removed the power head and then removed the cylinder head. The piston and cylinders were great, yet it was still hard to pull. I then removed the recoil and there it was...the flywhell nut had spun off and was jammed against the pull mechanism, making it hard to pull. So tonight I am ordering some parts from Iboats and hope to get this little guy running again.....:)
