hey guys, ive been given a complete 1963 75hp starflite.put it on the stand today and tried to start it direct from starter and came up with zero spark.do you have to hook up wiring and have the key on?im leaning towards the coil being shot as when i pulled the coil wire there was oil on it.compresson is good and this is a elect shift model.points look new and so does condencer.will be doing lots of reading about this motor soon just wondering about the ignition system and whether you have to have the key on or no when working on it. thanks in advance.

Did you hot wire the starter? If so the ignition system needs to be turned on for there to be power to the plugs. (I think) Other wise all you are doing is turning on the starter motor without the outboard being turned on.

You either need the key in the on position or disconnect the two black wires from the ignition key switch. We just disconnected all wires from the key ignition switch since we didn't have the key.

Nope, wrong information. The '63 Starfilite has battery ignition, not magneto. Motor has to be grounded to battery. Then +12 volts has to be applied to the red & white wire leading to the coil to turn it on (not directly to the coil). The red & white wire is a 1 ohm resistance wire.

When running, +12V applied to either the blue or green wire will put it in forward or reverse. Applying 12V to BOTH the blue and green at the same time will instantly ruin your whole day.

so if i undersand correctly you cant just jump start this motor by hooking up battery to ground and hitting the starter with positive?you need ignition on?basically all i wanted to do was test to make sure i had spark before i went any further with this motor as my ultimate plan is if everything works out ok to put this motor on my woody .it also has tilt trim ,and i will also have to make sure the lower unit works ok.just looking at this motor it looks very clean with no signs of over heating or abuse.i currently have a 82 90 hp rude on the boat that runs great but this is a period motor thing i want to do.

Correct, no 12v to the red & white wire, no spark

yes thanks and i should learn how to read first then tinker, but what fun would there be in that, lol.the only thing i dont like about the motor is the cowling is in dire need of a paint job unlike the rest of the motor which is very good,i would guess that it was stored with a tarp over it and over the years its rubbed the paint right off the first half of the top.should go very good with the old wood boat and unlike most people i like the elect shift as ive never had problems with my old 55 johnson ever when i owned it and boy i put a lot of hours on that triple.will keep everybody up to date as i delve into the 63 hoping its a go for next spring .
