Hi folks,
I own a Merc 60 , 6hp o/b ser# 1488047 which has a peculiar problem. These are the symptoms:
-starts and idles O.K.
-runs in gear at idle or just up ¼ speed
-stalls after additional throttle is applied

I have checked the gas, gas tank, hose and fittings. I removed, disassembled, cleaned and reassembled carburetor. Checked fuel pump diaphragm and it still stalls.
Electrical problem?

If I pull the flywheel, how can I test the condenser or coil?

I mostly use this motor as a kicker and for trolling. Other than a broken-off gear shifter, it has been a good fishing companion for me and my dad as I grew up. I don’t want part with it just yet.
Thanks for any help you could give me.

Re: 62 MERC, help

Howdy, Al.

Your symptoms are of a clogged high speed jet or of enough of a restriction in fuel supply that it can't get fuel to the carb as fast as it is burned at higher throttle settings.

Pump your primer bulb immediately before you open her up. If she revs up okay then (in gear) it is a fuel supply problem. Check the tank vent and pickup for restrictions, all hoses for air leaks, and fuel pump for output (pull the hose and turn her over. Strong squirts?).

Let us know what you find. :)

Re: 62 MERC, help

Thanks for the response JB,
I'll recheck the tank and lines again. I do remember that gas was trickling from the carb mouth after I pumped the priming bulb. I'll try squeezing the bulb while throttling up to see if I can keep it running.
I will keep you posted.
Al
