I just bought a 62 Fastwin last week for $50. S/N 15036M-06063. Not bad shape overall but I know it has some issues with water in the lower unit. It had been sitting in this guy's shed for 10+ years as it belonged to his father-in-law.
When I initially looked at it and took out the lower drain plug, some clear water came out. By the time I got it home and removed the plug again, a light brown oil water mix came pouring out.
First thing I saw was that neither drain/fill screw had any gaskets so that is probably why water got in there in the first place. On closer inspection, I noticed a slight bulge and crack in the aluminum just below the cav plate. I scratched my head a bit but then I figured out it was likely freeze damage from the water in the lower unit.
I haven't pulled the lower unit off yet, but I have a feeling that the gears are ok. The way the clear water first came out, I think the grease protected the gears, but we'll see.

Looks as if I will need a partial lower unit replacement so I have been checking out eBay. Does anyone know what years and HPs are interchangeable with direct bolt on?

Oh heck if you are thinking of bolting on a whole complete lower unit, those things came out around 1955 and ran clear up into the late 1970's. That doesn't mean the internal parts are all alike though.

At this point, I am just looking for the empty housing as I don't think I need the gears nor the skeg. I have seen one from a 67 Johnson 20hp on ebay that looks as it might fit but that's a fully populated lower unit with the skeg.
