Was wondering would these work for me? '62 Johnson 28hp.
Can these push/pull controllers easily added to an outboard for throttle and shift?
What else is needed?
Also, the cables are 9' long. Can they be coiled or shortened and still work?

I recall tashasdaddy had a project where he added stick control.
Hopefully TD will chime in.

thanks,
jasper

That is an unusual looking control, but I assume it will work if the cables are correct and move in the right direction. Your motor requires controls that pull for forward gear and push for opening the throttle.

9 ft is too long?? Must be a mighty short boat. You want to avoid any more bends in the cables than absolutely necessary. Avoid S curves at the motor. It is best to go past the motor and make a full circle loop back to it. That will consume a lot of cable length too.

I think TD was talking about stick steering. Uses a single fore-aft-motion stick instead of a conventional steering wheel.

F_R,
I was thinking about going with a controller like this because it may be easier and cheaper than finding a tiller arm to my motor. The controller would be at the stern, which is why I asked about coiling-up the cables. The controller cost $20, but if the cable ends (or motor) require special adapters and such, it probably won't be worth the hassle though.
thanks,
jasper

My guess is that the controller that you have pictured is for something other than an OMC motor. Whether the end fitting will work with your motor, I don't know. Ideally, what you should look for to match up with your motor is an old OMC Shipmaster (Johnson) or Simplex (Evinrude) control unit. While each has its own name, they are identical other than badging.

Just out of curiosity, if you would mount a control unit very close to the motor, what is your intention in regard to steering?

Yea, not sure what the controller was used on. Just something I saw on craigslist and wondered if it could work. I'll continue to keep an eye out for a tiller arm assembly for my motor. thanks.
