'61 Lark III 40 HP - LU to Exhaust Tube Gasket?

After dropping the lower unit to check the condition of the impeller, I noticed there is no gasket at the top of the lower unit where it bolts to the exhaust tube. I've got an original service manual for this motor, and it shows nothing there either.

This seems rather odd to me. Should I run a bit of 3M 847 Rubber and Gasket Sealant around the flange, or is it REALLY OK without any type of gasket? Seems ot me water wouldn't be good in there.

Normal - that is not a water-tight union.
