I just bought a 61 40 hp johnson. I am trying to remove the flywheel to check the coils and points because it does not have spark. I have tried to remove it with a harmonic balance puller and heat and a gear puller with heat and all the force I could put on it and it still don't pop.Any ideas???

With the puller loaded to the hilt, try tapping (lightly) with a hammer on the head of the puller, I have also read on this board that a air powered ratchet would have the same effect(vibration),also the air tool can apply lots of torque with little effort reqd. to hold the flywheel in place. Good Luck and let me know what happens. PS go easy with the heat, there are rubber crankshaft seals nearby.

Thanks evin300
I have tried tapping on the head of the puller and still no help. I will try the air rachet and see what happens.

I assume you've tried a good soak of penetrating oil to help things along? I have had great success with a product called Fluid Film. Just a thought!

Fouled Plug
Yes I have tried a penetrating oil 4 about a week 1/2, Kerol(not sure on the spelling) oil i have heard this type is suppose to be top of the industry, but not for my situation. Maybe I'll try yours. At this point I'll try anything. Thanks.

Well, If the puller fits properly and if nothing else works, I would try a bag of ice to get it nice and cold (shrink) and then dry ice would be my final choice, this stuff is REALLY cold and can be purchased from the Ice Cream scooter guys and other places.

Re: 61 johnson can't remove flywheel

This is not good. From what you are saying it's sounds like you are getting plenty of pull. Those early RD engines from the late 50 and early 60's had a real small taper to the crankshaft tops. The problem was corrected in 62 or 63 with a heavier top end on the crank. What can happen is if the crank wasn't torqued down hard enough and she sneezed or backfired the crank will shear off the woodruff key and spin inside the flywheel. Heat builds so quick it can actually weld itself together at this point.

From the amount of pressure you sound like you are getting on it, it sure sounds like this has happened. If this is the case then the flywheel and the crank are scrap.
