Help, I have 2004 60hp 2 stroke yamaha. I was havng a problem when I would give my boat gas it would just stall, when it idled it stalled. Once I got it up on and running it would run fine. So I changed the water seperator, fuel filter and rebuilt carbs. It seemed to run fine the first time I took it out but it was blowing alot more smoke than it did before, using a lot more oil. So I ran it offshore and ran fine for 4 hours. I decided to turn engine off and thats when the same problem from above reared its head. It would keep cutting offwhen in gear and giving gas. If I took it out of gear and revved the engine it would not die. It seems like only 2 of the cylinders are running also spark plug in that cylinder is gummed up this was a brand new plug. Also the new fuel line seems to need a lot more pumping than the old one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: 60hp yamaha cuts out at idle

To start Troubleshooting;

1. You say you have rebuilt the carb, did you make sure you have cleaned all the jets? (by blowing air into them??)

To me it sounds like problem with idle jet if it stalls at idle.

2. Then, check the fuel pump. Not sure if you have inline fuel filter or not, but see if you get enough fuel into the filter?? You can also manually pump fuel whilst the engine is idling (using the bulb) to see if the situation improves, if it does, them most probably the fuel pump needs attention.

3. Is your timing correct?

4. Have you checked all spark plugs? wires? and see if you actually have current flowing into them?

But as I said, most probably you must open your carbs again and make sure you clean the jets properly, also make sure your air hoses etc. are not blocked by anything...

Re: 60hp yamaha cuts out at idle

For what its worth, I had similar issues with our 90 TLRD. Ethanol disintegrated the fuel line and the bowls looked like someone took a crap. The third time through was the charm. I took a brass wire from a brush and ran it through both ends of the pilot jet passage and that seemed to do the trick. The last time out it started easily, ran smooth with consistent idle, but my wife said it smells "stinkier" than before and I found the bowls weeping at the gaskets. When the weather clears, they'll get changed out.

I'd also check or just plain replace all the fuel hoses and accessories. Ethanol may have attacked the hoses downstream of your filter and could be making your cleanings fruitless effort.

If you don't have Yamaha's manual, I suggest you get one. One nice benefit is that it shows the linkage adjustments for carbs and oil pump against marks on the block without the need for special tools.

Hope this helps.
