Greetings!
Hoping someone can lend a hand with this 60HP Mercury S/N 0G 268499.
I want to start by saying this Merc is used on a boat that is severly overloaded with skis and equipment. We use it to transport equipment to and from the launch ramp at our practice site down river. So it spends a good deal of time pushing a boat fully loaded and never reaches plane...
It started making a metalic clicking noise last fall that changed with engine speed. My experience with 4 stroke auto engines lead me to believe it could be releated a piston/rod issue...
During disassembly of the PH I noticed severe scoring on two out of three pistons. The pic shows the crank upside down in relationship to it's actual installed position. I am wondering if the scoring is due to cold seizure or a lack of lubrication or both?
I have also been looking at the fuel pump and found debris inside the diaphagm as well as check valves that look deformed.
I checked the reed valves on the induction plate as per the manual and only 2 of them passed the stand-off clearance specs.
Before we go through the time and expense of re-building this power head I would like to make sure we can correct the cause of this failure. Obviously the overloading of the boat can't be helped but how it is operated during those times can easily corrected. I can check the operation of the automatic oiling system out after a rebuild of course, but would it be OK to pre-mix the gas in the main tank?
Thanks in advance,
J
