Greetings!
Hoping someone can lend a hand with this 60HP Mercury S/N 0G 268499.

I want to start by saying this Merc is used on a boat that is severly overloaded with skis and equipment. We use it to transport equipment to and from the launch ramp at our practice site down river. So it spends a good deal of time pushing a boat fully loaded and never reaches plane...

It started making a metalic clicking noise last fall that changed with engine speed. My experience with 4 stroke auto engines lead me to believe it could be releated a piston/rod issue...

During disassembly of the PH I noticed severe scoring on two out of three pistons. The pic shows the crank upside down in relationship to it's actual installed position. I am wondering if the scoring is due to cold seizure or a lack of lubrication or both?

I have also been looking at the fuel pump and found debris inside the diaphagm as well as check valves that look deformed.

I checked the reed valves on the induction plate as per the manual and only 2 of them passed the stand-off clearance specs.

Before we go through the time and expense of re-building this power head I would like to make sure we can correct the cause of this failure. Obviously the overloading of the boat can't be helped but how it is operated during those times can easily corrected. I can check the operation of the automatic oiling system out after a rebuild of course, but would it be OK to pre-mix the gas in the main tank?

Thanks in advance,
J

For one, proper oil to gas ratio. Keeping the carbs in optimum condition so that the powerhead is not deprived of proper oil levels. While you are at it check the reed valves for wear and tear

Yes, I also have a concern about the oil to gas ratio and if the automatic system is working. I can check that system out once the engine is running again.

I also plan to clean the carbs.

I checked the read valves and found all but two of them to be sagging, wouldn't meet the stand off clearnance specs, so I will be replacing them as well.

Do you know of any suppliers that offer power head rebuilding kits? It seems like most sites make you pick the individual parts out one by one.
Thanks,
J

What year is your engine? If it's an older model then there are some stores that supply the necessary parts for the newer models you can go to any dealership
