I am running a 2005 60hp mercury 2-stoke bigfoot on a bass tracker pro team 175. I know when you first start the motor, it needs to be choked. The problem I am having is that everytime i start the motor, i have to choke it or it doesnt start. Even after just shutting it down and restarting, it needs to be choked or it doesnt start. Any suggestions what could be wrong? I also think i am burning up most of my gas by trying to start it.

Are you pumping up the primer bulb? It could be the carbs need adjustment or cleaning. Maybe the idle mixture screws need opening some. Does it also bog on acceleration?

Yes i always make sure the bulb is tight. Yes it acutally does have a slight bog when i accelerate.

There's one thing that rarely gets considered and that's the cranking speed of the motor. Does your starter turn the engine over at 300 rpms or better?

The second thing that is to be considered is the engines compression. If compression is low, it can become hard to start without excessive choke and will smoke more than normal when it does start.

Those are just two of the more common reasons. Check the cranking speed with a tach and do a compression check. If you don't have a Merc Service Manual for it, you might consider getting one.
