I have a 1988 60hp Mariner. Here is the problem: The boat starts and idles fine, it will even run perfectly out of the water. But, when ran on the lake it runs terrible. The motor starts fine upon acceleration. then about 50 yards after full throttle the motor bogs down and either dies or runs at about 5 mph. For the rest of the day the motor is hard to start and drives at about 5 mph at full throttle. I do not notice any excessive smoke or fuel smell, yet after driving about four or five miles the boat consumed about 5 gallons of fuel. The next morning the boat fires up fine and then starts all over again. Any Ideas?????

Re: 60hp Mariner need help

Hey Rob,
First thing I would check is the tank vent. Is the prime bulb collapsing when it bogs ?

I'd toss it in the lake again, but this time run with the engine cover off. Have someone watch the cloke flaps to see if they are closing on you. Maybe the linkage has come loose and the high rpm draws them closed, causing your bog down (cuts off air). How many cylinders on this ?

I would'nt keep the throttle floored after it boggs.

Im no expert, but I know the difference between having a bottle in front of me and having a frontal labotomy...........

Hope this helps.............
