Is clicking in the stator area normal? It sounds like a good spark is going on in there (rapid tick) while the key is on (not trying to start).

When I turn the key, the motor starts ticking. It sounds like a hard spark is going on around the stator area. I dont try to start the motor just turn the key to on position. Had a few other motors before and dont remember any ticking before.

Thank you

Check the points (both), they should be set to 0.01".
Is it possible that the engine stopped where the points are on the verge of opening? Turn the flywheel a bit and see if it is still ticking.

You did not say if your engine is running right?
In any event, I would remove the flywheel, and check the gaps of the points and the anti reverse spring. While you are at it, see the condition of the distributor, are there any carbon traces there. Do you see any trace of arcing somewhere. there?
Check the condition of the wire from the points to the amp (black and white striped wire). Sometimes they have internal breaks in it if they are old. Also do check if other electrical connections are tight.

Forgot to mention that you also want to check if it is the high-tension that is arcing under the flywheel and giving that ticking sound.
Remove (open) the high tension cable connection between the ignition coil and distributor. Put a spark-gap to the high-tension coil, and see if that is the one that is sparking. If not, then something else, like the stator assembly is arcing there.

Thank you I will try that. I have not got the engine running yet. The motor will not turn fast enough to get it started. I changed the starter and solenoid and they were not the problem. the motor spins good when the plugs are out but I put them back in and it hardly turns.

Have your battery load tested and clean all battery connections on both the battery and the mtr. I've also seen bad power packs give the prob you have with the ignition.

I am up and running! Thank you for all your help. I replaced the 3 month old battery with a new one and the motor started and the clicking quit. Thanks again!
