I got the neutral safety switch sorted out and now when I turn the ignition I hear a loud click noise at the solenoid and yet it will not start the starter motor. I know the starter works, I can jump start the starter. It also seems to be in gear when I am trying to start it. How do I get it in Neutral and what do I do to get it to start?

Thanks.

I'm not too familiar with this engine, but make sure it's in neutral before starting. If it's like newer engines, there is a neutral safety switch somewhere to keep it from starting when in gear. Sort that part out first, then if it's still having problems, the common consensus is going to be to clean ALL the starter wires from the battery to the motor, and also all the way to the starter. If all goes well there and it's still not working, suspect the starter solenoid. I had a '78 35hp doing this click thing, replaced the solenoid, never gave me another problem. Figure out that neutral issue first though, I'd suspect starting it in gear isn't the best thing to do to a motor.

Did you see the post I put in your other thread about the shift switch/neutral start circuit in the control box?

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

totally agree. sounds like a bad connection or wire.
