I mistakenly removed the shift rod pivot while draining all the old nasty lower unit oil on this Lark 2 I'm trying to bring back to life. There is a hole in the shift lever that appears the pivot bolt slips through. If I install it there however, it will only shift into neutral and reverse, not forward. I see others have done the same thing, but I don't know why mine is not shifing correctly? I did take the lower unit apart and replace the prop O-ring while I was at it, and made sure the shifting dog was riding on the lever correctly.

I assume you removed the lower unit to do the job - so you may not have the shift rod inserted back in the coupler properly. There is an indent at the ends of the shift rods which must line up with the bolt holes in the coupler. If it's not lined up properly, the bolt will go back through, but will strip the threads.

If it is not the problem that Lindy has cited, it may be that you did not install the thrust washers on the propshaft into the correct grooves in the gearcase halves.

it sounds like the bolt is not thru the indention on the shift rod.
