I have a Merc . 60 HP model 60ELHPTO that I need to replace the water pump on and am low on cash supporting 2 families so i need to do it myself . I looked at the manual online and it looks pretty straight forward . I have done this before on other motors but ran into a problem with the shift shaft .

1. Loosen Jam nut and unscrew attaching nut to separate shift shaft.
2. Take trim tab off and remove nut in trim tab cavity.
3. Remove 4 gear case bolts/drive shaft housing bolts
4 Drop lower unit replace water pump and re install.

the shift shaft nut looks to be on the outside of the lower unit correct ?
any tips and cautions would be appreciated.
Should i lube any areas on the impeller before installing ?

Sounds like you have it covered.

Before you start, take a sharpy marker and mark the jam nut position.
Mark the threads on both shafts, and mark the nut side that faces out.

This will help to get the shaft adjusted properly when re-assembling.

No need to lube the water pump.
Some guys will put a little dish soap on the impeller to aid installation, but ZI think it just makes it too slippery to work with.

Are you familiar with this model ? I have tried doing impeller replacements before and run into problems with the shift shaft and stuff and want to make sure this one is as simple as it looks .
