My '99 60 hp mercury is having a hard time starting and running. I have to give it half throttle to get it started and then it acts like its flooding out/bogging down once its started. Usually once I get it on plane it seems to run fine. Not today though, I couldn't manage to get on plane. I hooked it up to the hose and there was a lot of gas coming out the exhaust when it was running rough. When I unhook the fuel line it will start to run fine until it runs out of gas. Is it a float problem or perhaps the fuel pump? I read another post where a fuel diaphram caused similar problems.

It seems to me like your carb needle is stuck or float alowing it to flood and that would count for your gas leakng out of exhaust. it dosent take much dirt in a carb to start acting up. it starts to run fine once u disconect the fuel line cause there is no more gas being pumped into the carb.

today i pulled the carbs off and cleaned them good. they seemed to be fine so i pulled off the fuel pump. the diaphrams seem fine but one of the check valves is not laying flat. will this cause fuel/oil to exit the exhaust? there was also a bunch of pieces of stuff in the pump that were a transparent tannish color. i pulled apart the line at the primer bulb and the fuel line is coated with the tannish color substance. it looks like the inside of the fuel line is disintegrating or is it build up from bad gas? i think i will replace the fuel line, primer bulb and rebuild the fuel pump. what do you think? also i am wondering how careful we have to be about putting gas in the tank that contains ethanol these days? does anyone have any input?

Sounds like classic bad fuel/lines. Its like little pieces of shellac running through your system. Can't be good..

Ethanol in the gas can attack a lot of materials in the fuel system, particularly older systems that were not made for 10% ethanol. Most of the outboard makers recommend against using ethanol, but if you have no choice, I would add one of the products, such as Marine Stabil, that is meant to prevent the negative effects of ethanol.

ethanol is a type of solvent the original engineers weren't planning on having run through the engine. It'll pretty much clean everything out. Which can produce both positive and negative effects depending on how much stuff you give it to dissolve(fuel line linings, tank linings, carbon buildup etc).

heres a good article of the effects of ethanol related to boats.

this week i replaced the fuel pump and run the motor on the hose. she purred... so i thought i had the problem fixed. i ran to the lake today and was frustrated to find the problem was still there. i had a hard time starting it and keeping it running. the thing is getting too much gas. i pulled the fuel supply line off of the enrichner valve and the thing fired right up and ran fine. i hooked the fuel line back up and the problem returned. so i unhooked the power to the valve and the problem was still there. so i'm thinking the enrichner valve needs replaced? i am not real sure how these things work?
