If the factory said no they are probably right. It would then blow out through the slots at the back of the lower unit. These slots are typically located just back from the oil plug and above the water level when running.

J_Parker.... The 1970 engines did not have a water telltale outlet. The majority of the water is transfered downwards and out through the center of the propeller.... this helps to keep the prop hub vaulcanizing rubber cool.

When the thermostat opens, some water deflected down and out the slots/holes at the rear of the lower unit that DownJigger describes.

Hello again Jparker70

You will find diagrams at this website. Do you have a two cylinder ?http://www.boaterssupply.com/default.asp?a=sec&id=7221&name=%20J60ELCSR&em_name=Johnson&et_name=1980%20Outboard

Sorry I was wrong about the pee-hole. Are you sure your iddle rpm is not set too low ? Should be around 750 rpm in gear, 1000 in neutral. Does your boat have a tach ? If you are concerned about cooling, you can buy a melt stick to hold against cylinderhead after you have run for some time, will tell you heat range it operates in.

I think you should be able to find diagrams anyway, your engine is similar to the 3 cyl 65 and 70 HP with small modifications.
